Swans Beat Dutch Champions League Qualification Hopefuls
By: Tom | July 18th, 2009Paulo Sousa recorded his first victory as Swansea manager after he saw his side put three past Dutch champions FC Twente. The Jacks fielded a mixed team that included many youngsters and despite conceding and playing against a full strength and talented side were always in control. The first half ended with both sides playing attractive football but nothing to show for it. The second half however was action packed with four goals and plenty of tough tackles, but ultimately the Jacks came through it to record an impressive win.
Gorka Pintado opened the scoring after an interception saw him through on goal, he Cooley lifted the ball over the keeper into the bottom of the net. Fc Twente then capitalised on the half time defensive changes to the swans by seeing a cross elude three defenders allowing Rukavytsa to blast home unmarked at the back post.
The scores were not level for long however as 18 year old winger Thomas scored a close range header from a Nathan Dyer corner. Thomas was lively on the right using his pace to challenge the Twente defence. In fact Thomas won Swansea a penalty after he was sithed down in the dying moments and looked on as Gorka Pintado Cooley slotted home the penalty.
Notable performances came from De vires who looked solid and unflappable and Andrea Orlandi who linked well with pratley and others. Dobbie made his first bow for the Swans and looked handy but one friendly match isn’t enough time to make a judgement on his abilities.
In all a promising start for a bare bones squad and a glimpse into the future of the club with Thomas showing that Wales and Swansea have some even younger talent coming through. I still think we need two defenders two strikers and a new attacking midfielder but seeing as the club has been in turmoil the lads and Sousa really stepped up to the plate today!
